No. 8 West Virginia Outlasts Maryland, 31-21.

Getty S 092212 Tavon%20Austin?  SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1348346465856Justin K. Aller/Getty Images(MORGANTOWN, W.Va.) —  Geno Smith threw for 338 yards and three touchdowns as the eighth-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers beat the Maryland Terrapins 31-21, Saturday afternoon.

Tavon Austin was the recipient of all three scores from Smith.  The senior caught 13 passes for 179 yards, and became the schools all-time receptions leader with 208 catches.

Junior linebacker Doug Rigg returned a fumble 51 yards for a touchdown for West Virginia (3-0).

Tyler Bitancurt added a 37-yard field goal to cap off the scoring for the Mountaineers.

The Terrapins (2-2) trailed from start to finish.  West Virginia punted on four of the first five possessions to begin the second half but Maryland was unable to close the gap.

Maryland freshman quarterback Perry Hills threw for 305 yards and three touchdowns, but also had an interception.

Fellow freshman wide receiver Stefon Diggs caught three passes for 113 yards and two scores for the Terrapins.
