South Korean Navy Fires Shots on North Korean Boats
Published at(TOKYO) — The South Korean Navy fired warning shots against North Korean fishing boats Friday, after they crossed into disputed waters in the Yellow Sea. The shots did not hit North Korean boats and forced fishermen to retreat, according to reports.
The North and South have repeatedly clashed in the area known for its rich fishing grounds. The boundary between the two countries isn’t clearly marked, which has led to violent clashes as both jostle for position during crab-catching season.
A few dozen people have been killed in the area since 1999.
