State Unemployment Rates: Nevada the Highest, N. Dakota Lowest

Nevada’s unemployment rate is 12 percent.  Rhode Island and California post the next highest rates at 10.7 and 10.6 percent, respectively.  North Dakota has the lowest jobless rate, at three percent.

The national unemployment rate is 8.1 percent.

As a group, 21 states have an unemployment rate significantly lower than the U.S. average, while 12 states have much higher rates.  Seventeen states and Washington, D.C., have rates that are about the same as the national average.

Here is the unemployment rate in key states in the 2012 presidential election:

Florida — 8.8% (same as last month but down quite a bit from 10.5 percent a year ago)

Ohio — 7.2% (same as last month, but down from 8.8 percent a year ago)

Wisconsin — 7.5% (up from 7.3 percent a month ago and about the same as 7.6 percent a year ago)

Colorado — 8.2% (about the same as 8.3 percent a month ago and a year ago)

Iowa — 5.5% (up from 5.3 percent a month ago but down from six percent a year ago)

Virginia — 5.9% (same as last month, but down from 6.4 percent a year ago)

New Hampshire — 5.7% (up from 5.4 percent last month and 5.5 percent this time last year)

Nevada — 12.1% (about the same as last month but down quite a bit from 13.8 percent a year ago)

North Carolina
— 9.7% (about the same as last month, but down from 10.7 percent a year ago)
