Opposition fighters detonated two huge roadside bombs in the heart of Damascus just before 7 a.m. It was followed by a fire fight between Syrian soldiers and the rebels, a rare style of attack in this conflict.

A Syrian television reporter for Iran’s Press TV was killed while covering the attack.

Syria’s information minister says there was only material damage while rebels claim dozens were killed.

According to the BBC, activists believe more than 27,000 people have died due to the violence throughout the country.
