“We new it would be difficult,” U.S. head coach Jurgen Klinsmann, who guaranteed his team would win, said. “It’s a tough team to play…very uncomfortable team to play. I think that the response was the right one after the defeat down in Jamaica. We’re back in pool position, and we know if we take care of things in the next two game, we will move on to the next round.”

The U.S. — playing without injured midfielders Landon Donovan and Michael Bradley — received a goal from Herculez Gomez in the 55th minute to seal the win.

The win ties the U.S. (2-1-1) with Guatemala (2-1-1) a top Group A of the North and Central American and Caribbean semifinals. The top two teams move on to next year’s six-team regional finals, with three of them qualifying for the 2014 World Cup.
