(BILLINGS, MT)  —   American Indian leaders on the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming are petitioning the state of Montana for control of a group of bison that wandered out of Yellowstone National Park several years ago. All 168 animals are currently in the custody of media mogul Ted Turner, who owns the nation’s largest private bison ranch. Tribal leaders say the animal is an important icon to their people and that the tribe has the means necessary to care for the animals. Nearby landowners are challenging the tribe’s claim, worrying that the bison might spread disease to domesticated cattle.
