Series creator Shonda Rhimes has announced on Twitter that the Grey’s Anatomy spin-off will end after its current sixth season.

She writes, “There was a lot of discussion and debate but, in the end, the guys at the network and the studio and I all decided that Private Practice was reaching its finish line.”

She also tells fans, “It’s heartbreaking to end…It’s rare for a show to go for more than 100 episodes and we are incredibly proud to have been such a show.”

Her statement was accompanied by a photo of the show’s cast and crew celebrating the recent 100th episode.

ABC last spring ordered 13 episodes of Private Practice for the current season.  The show’s star, Kate Walsh, was set to leave the show following those episodes.  She brought her Grey’s Anatomy character, Dr. Addison Montgomery, to Private Practice when it premiered in 2007.

Private Practice has also starred Taye Diggs, Amy Brenneman, Benjamin Bratt and Tim Daly, the latter of whom departed the show after last season.
