Angels Reward Catcher Chris Iannetta With Contract Extension

Hannah Foslien/Getty Images(ANAHEIM, Calif.) — The Los Angeles Angels may not have made the playoffs this season, but they’re not wasting any time trying to build for 2013. The team has rewarded catcher Chris Iannetta with a three-year contract extension worth $15.55 million.
Iannetta was set to become a free agent at the end of the season, but instead he’ll likely spend the next three seasons in southern California.
The 29-year old Iannetta will earn $5.05 million in 2013, $4.97 million in 2014, and $5.2 million in 2015. His deal also includes up to $500,000 in performance-based bonuses on starts at catcher.
Even though he missed 2 1/2 months with a wrist injury, Iannetta proved to be a reliable player behind the plate and with hit bat. Ianetta played in just 79 games in 2012, but it was enough for the team to commit to him long-term. In his first season with the Angels, he hit .240 with nine home runs and 26 RBI.
Iannetta had spent the previous six seasons with the Colorado Rockies.
