The Giants now lead the best-of-seven series 2-0.

Bumgarner had allowed 10 earned runs in eight innings in his previous two starts this postseason.

“I felt pretty good out there,” Bumgarner said after the game. “I was able to make pitches this time, that was the biggest difference for me. I hadn’t done a good job so far this postseason until today.”

Giants outfielder Hunter Pence scored what proved to be the winning run in the seventh inning, when shortstop Brandon Crawford hit into a double play with no one out.

Tigers starting pitcher Doug Fister was the hard-luck loser. He pitched six innings, allowing one run and striking out three in the loss.

Game 3 will be Saturday night in Detroit. The Tigers will send Anibal Sanchez to the mound. He will be opposed by Ryan Vogelsong. First pitch is scheduled for 8 p.m Eastern.
