Chiefs’ Eric Winston Scolds Fans for Cheering Cassel Injury

NFL via Getty Images(KANSAS CITY, Mo.) — During the Kansas City Chiefs’ 9-6 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, quarterback Matt Cassel suffered a concussion in the fourth quarter. Some Chiefs players, specifically tackle Eric Winston, voiced their frustrations as a majority of Chiefs fans cheered as Cassel remained on his back for several minutes after suffering the injury.
Ever since Cassel joined the Chiefs in 2008, he’s been heavily scrutinized for his inconsistent yet solid play behind center. With each Chiefs’ loss, the frustration with Cassel has increased. His teammates have continued to support and stand behind him throughout his time in Kansas City.
“It’s 100-percent sickening,” Chiefs tackle Eric Winston said after the game. “I’ve never,ever — and I’ve been in some rough times on some rough teams — I’ve never been more embarrassed in my life to play football than at that moment right there. I get emotional about it because these guys, they work their butts off. Matt Cassel hasn’t done anything to you people.”
“Hey, if he’s not the best quarterback, he’s not the best quarterback, and that’s OK, but he’s a person,” Winston went on to say. “And he got knocked out in a game and we’ve got 70,000 people cheering that he got knocked out.”
In five games this season, Cassel has thrown only five touchdowns compared to nine interceptions and four fumbles. He also ranks 32nd out of 33 quarterbacks with a 66.3 quarterback rating.
