(NEW YORK) — At midnight Tuesday, Walt Disney Pictures and Marvel Studios let rip with the first trailer for Iron Man 3, and the anticipated coming attraction didn’t disappoint.
The snippet shows Robert Downey Jr. as a very different Tony Stark post-Avengers: haunted by the alien invasion that closed that blockbuster, and ruthlessly pursued by The Mandarin, the calculating villain played by Oscar winner Ben Kingsley.
The action-packed coming attraction teases director Shane Black’s promised darker vision for the oft-troubled comic hero: the Mandarin’s agents apparently destroy Stark’s cool cliff-side Malibu mansion, and abduct the genius-billionaire-playboy-philanthropist’s girl Pepper Potts, played again by Gwyneth Paltrow.
Iron Man 3, which also stars Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, former Iron Man series director Jon Favreau, and James Badge Dale, opens on May 3, 2013.
