Islanders Moving to Brooklyn
Published at | Updated at(NEW YORK) – The New York Islanders have agreed to move to Brooklyn’s Barclays Center from Long Island as early as 2015, the team announced on Wednesday. The team will continue to be called the New York Islanders.
Islanders owner Charles Wang had threatened to move the team from the site when the team’s current lease with Nassau Coliseum expires after 2015. The new deal is for 25 years at the Barclays Center.
“I’m very excited to be here today,” Wang said Tuesday. “We have tried very hard to keep the Islanders in their original home in Nassau County. Unfortunately we were unable to achieve that dream.”
“This has been a very long journey for the Islander family.”
