Revis tore the ACL in week three against the Miami Dolphins but the Jets elected not to place him on IR right away.  They kept him off in the slim chance that he could return from surgery and be able to play in February’s Super Bowl if the Jets get there.

Ryan said Revis will be placed on IR immediately because they needed to fill the roster spot with a safety by Saturday.

Safety Eric Smith sprained his knee in practice on Thursday and will miss Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts.

The roster spot will be filled by rookie safety Antonio Allen, who was called up from the practice squad.

Revis has been working out at the team’s facility in Florham Park, New Jersey, walking on a zero-gravity treadmill.  His doctors wanted to strengthen the knee as much as possible before he underwent surgery to repair the torn ligament.

The surgery is scheduled for October 18.
