Miami Marlins Fire Ozzie Guillen
Published at(MIAMI) — The Miami Marlins fired manager Ozzie Guillen on Tuesday, after finishing the year with a 69-93 record.
The 48-year-old Guillen left the Chicago White Sox last season after spending eight seasons as their skipper. He signed a four-year deal with the Marlins worth $10 million. Miami still owes Guillen $7.5 million for the remaining three years on his contract.
The Marlins, wanting to make a good impression in their new ballpark, went on a spending spree last offseason, signing shortstop Jose Reyes, starting pitcher Mark Buehrle and closer Heath Bell for a combined $191 million. Bell was traded to Arizona last weekend.
Despite the influx of talent, Guillen began the season on a sour note when he angered Cuban Americans for praising Fidel Castro in a magazine interview. The Marlins suspended Guillen for five games for the remarks.
