(DORAL, Fla.) – One person is dead and eight are injured after a parking garage at Miami Dade College collapsed Wednesday. One person is believed to still be trapped alive in the wreckage.
The four-story garage was under construction when the levels collapsed on one another, according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Capt. Louie Fernandez, who described the wreckage as the largest he’d ever seen. All of the victims were employees of the construction company overseeing the project.
Emergency rescue teams are working to free the trapped employee from the rubble. Fernandez told ABC News, “Our job with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue is to continue working with the one person that we know that’s still live and trapped beneath the debris. It’s gonna be a long, tedious effort.”
According to The Reporter, Miami-Dade College’s student paper, construction on the $24 million garage began in February 2012 and was slated for completion in December.
