Ruiz just finished the guaranteed portion of his the three-year, $8.85 million contract. In 2013, he will earn $5 million.

Even though he missed a significant amount of time due to injury, Ruiz was considered one of the best catchers in all of Major League Baseball in 2012. He made his first All-Star team at the age of 33.

In just 114 games played, Ruiz hit .325 with 16 home runs and 68 RBIs. He set career highs in hits, runs, doubles, home runs, and RBIs.

It is unknown what Ruiz’ future with the Phillies will hold after 2013. According to Baseball America, the Phillies have two of the top-10 catching prospects in the minors (Sebastian Valle and Tommy Joseph).

Ruiz has been with the Phillies for all six seasons of the Major League career. Erik Kratz is expected to back up Ruiz in 2013.
