How do you explain the phenomenon that more people with the first name “Sandy” are more likely to make contributions to the campaign of President Obama than GOP nominee Mitt Romney?

According to a Yahoo! News analysis of FEC records, 73 percent of the 353 “Sandys” who donated at least $200 to the campaign gave to the incumbent. However, Obama is not that far ahead in total contributions from “Sandys” for this cycle, $134,936 to $101,172.

It seems Romney’s “Sandys” are fewer, but more generous.

People with names of other large storms of the past few decades also seem to open their wallets more for the president, FEC records show, including Katrina, Rita, Frances and Andrew.
