Study researcher, Rory Reid from the University of California at Los Angeles, says that a person would be diagnosed with hypersexual disorder (sex addiction) if the person had excessive amounts of sex, used sex frequently to cope with stress and if their activities interfered with their daily life in a disruptive manner. Also, the sexual urges are not cause by drugs, alcohol or other mental disorders.

The study was published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine and will be sent to the American Psychiatric Association for review.

Over 200 people were interviewed by researchers, who were referred to a mental health clinic without knowing the specifics of their referral, and 134 were diagnosed with hypersexual disorder using the symptoms listed in the study.
