The 53-year-old Francona guided the Boston Red Sox to two World Series titles during his time at Fenway and is ready for his next challenge.

“I’m really excited,” Francona said on the air as an ESPN analyst, his job for the past season. “People who don’t know me may have thought I was looking for something different.”

After being fired as Philadelphia’s manager in 2000, Francona worked in Cleveland’s front office as an adviser and spent a portion of the 1988 season on Cleveland’s major league roster.  His father, Tito, also played with the Indians from 1959-64.

The Indians have not won a World Series since 1948 and finished 68-94 in 2012.  Bench coach, Sandy Alomar Jr., was also considered for the job after serving as the interim manager the final six games of 2012.

Alomar has been offered a spot on Francona’s staff, most likely as bench coach.  The Indians will introduce Francona on Monday.
