Oakland took a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning before Kelly scored on a wild pitch by Ryan Cook during Alex Avila’s at-bat with two outs.

Tigers starter Doug Fister pitched seven innings, striking out eight, and gave up two runs for the no-decision.  Al Alburquerque picked up the win in relief for Detroit.

Athletics starter Tommy Milone went six innings, gave up five hits, and one run.  Grant Balfour served up the sacrifice fly to Kelly in the bottom of the ninth for the loss.

“They’re not going to cash it in, trust me,” said Tigers manager Jim Leyland on going for the sweep on Tuesday.  “Their manager’s tough, their players are tough, and we’ve got a long way to go yet.”

Anibal Sanchez will take the ball for Detroit and will be opposed by Brett Anderson in Game 3.
