Embassy officials told Americans to avoid going near key government buildings in the Pakistani capital while staying clear of hotels that cater to Westerners, including the Marriott, Serenab, Holiday Inn, Best Western and Margalla Motel.

Meanwhile, a motorcade with thousands of people opposing U.S.-led drone attacks in Pakistan was stopped by Pakistani soldiers from entering restive tribal regions of South Waziristan where most of the strikes against Taliban and al Qaeda militants take place.

The rally, which began on Saturday, was being led by Imran Khan, a cricketer-turned-politician who has gained wide support for his efforts.

While the motorcade was peaceful, security forces were fearful of trouble if the demonstrators entered the tribal regions since militants regard Khan as a puppet of the West.
