The team has singed Colon to a one-year contract despite being suspended for 50 games by Major League Baseball last season while with the A’s.

Last season, Colon was suspended 50 games after testing positive for testosterone. The 39-year old Colon still has five games remaining on his suspension and will earn $3 million next season. His contract also includes potential performance bonuses.

Despite the suspension, Colon was very reliable for the Athletics last season. In 24 starts, Colon went 10-9 with a 3.43 ERA.

“We wanted to bring him back — everybody, Bob (Melvin), me, and everybody,” Athletics general manager Billy Beane said. “We ended up with a very good rotation, a young and talented rotation. But we wanted to find a veteran guy. In Bartolo’s case, based on the production, he was cost effective and good. It’s pretty hard to find that type of pitcher at that cost on a short-term deal.”

Beane said the team scouted him during winter ball, and though enough of his performance to give him another contract with the team.
