“We have done everything we could,” Director of the Centro Medico trauma center in San Juan Dr. Ernesto Torres said. “We have to tell the people of Puerto Rico and the entire world that Macho Camacho has died. He is brain dead.”

The doctor also announced that Camacho’s family is expected to decide by Friday whether he should be taken off life support.

Camacho, 50, was shot in the face while sitting in a Mustang outside a bar with his friend Tuesday night.

It was originally thought that Camacho would survive, but according to Torres, his condition worsened when his heart stopped briefly.

Camacho was born in Puerto Rico but grew up mostly in New York’s Harlem.

He has a career record of 79-6-3 in the ring, and has won the super lightweight, lightweight, and junior welterweight world titles in the 1980’s.
