French Government Approves Marriage and Adoption Rights for Gay Couples
Published at(PARIS) — French lawmakers approved a bill that will make it legal for same-sex couples to marry and adopt children.
During his presidential campaign, President Francois Hollande had promised to expand rights for gay couples. France currently allows for same-sex couples to enter into civil unions.
Though Hollande says the changes would be progress “for the whole of society,” more than 1,000 French mayors oppose the bill, and have signed a petition rejecting the proposal, according to BBC News. The Catholic Church is also in opposition to the changes.
The French parliament will debate the bill in January.
