“I was bold enough to say, ‘Yeah, I like a girl. And?’” Lohan told Us Weekly. “That put her in a situation where she was being attacked every day. That’s not fair. And what am I left with? Heartbreak. That was three years ago. It was my last serious relationship.”

The couple had a messy split in 2009. Lohan was 22 at time and Ronson was 32. Shortly before their breakup, Lohan was reportedly barred from entering a party Ronson was DJ-ing at West Hollywood’s Bar Marmont. But the Liz & Dick star insists today they remain friends.

“I needed to love myself first before I could be with anyone,” she told Us Weekly. “And I was going through a lot. Two toxic people cannot be together. End of story. We’re friends now. That’s how it started, so I think that’s what was meant to be.”

A representative for Ronson did not immediately respond to ABCNews.com’s request for comment.

Lohan’s dad, Michael Lohan, accused Ronson of  “using my daughter” during their relationship.

“Lindsay doesn’t need to keep following Samantha around,” Michael Lohan told ABCNews.com in April 2009. “She needs to sit down with her parents. She needs the support of both of us to help her along. Lindsay’s an emotional person. I want her to get on with her life in the right direction and a healthy way.”

In the most recent issue of Us Weekly, Lohan said she wants to be remembered as an actress not a troubled star. But she said she doesn’t regret anything she has done during her time in the spotlight.

“[I regret] nothing, because then I wouldn’t have been able to cry in scenes at the drop of a hat,” she said. “I have it tattooed: LIVE WITHOUT REGRETS. I’m not saying I wanted to go to a jail cell, but I’ve drawn from all of it.”
