To top it off, they’ll be facing a backup quarterback.

USC coach Lane Kiffin said on Sunday that starting quarterback Matt Barkley will not play against the Irish after spraining the AC joint in his throwing shoulder against UCLA in his last game.

“I feel bad for him and his family,” Kiffin said. “This is obviously not how you want it to be.”

The injury occured when Barkley was sacked late in the 38-28 loss to the Bruins on Saturday.

In his place, USC will send out redshirt freshman Max Wittek, who has never started at the collegiate level. He has completed 8 of 9 passes off the bench this season.

Barkley also missed the game against Notre Dame in 2010 with a sprained ankle.
