“I still feel I have plenty to give to this game and that I can play baseball at a high level. But after serious consideration, both sides agree that we would benefit from a fresh start,” Bay said in a team-issued statement. “I’m grateful we were able to reach an agreement to allow that to happen.”

Bay signed with the Mets in 2010 for four years and $66 million, but has failed to live up to the expectations. A combination of injuries and poor performance has made him a subject of ire by fans.

The financial terms were not disclosed.

The former Red Sox and Pirate outfielder hit only .234 in his Met career and appeared in just 70 games this past season.

“Jason has a tremendous work ethic,” Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said in the statement. “There was never any question about it. Unfortunately, the results weren’t there and we are in a results-oriented business. We thank Jason for his efforts and wish him well.”
