The team has signed third baseman David Wright to a eight-year deal worth $138 million.

Wright’s contract is the largest deal in franchise history and will keep Wright with the Mets till the 2020 season. His deal surpasses the six-year, $137.5 million deal Johan Santana signed with the team in 2008.

The 29-year-old has spent his first eight seasons in Major League Baseball with the Mets and is considered the face of the franchise. Last season, Wright became the franchise leader in hits, runs, walks, and RBIs. He will be 38 when his new deal expires.

While Wright’s deal may seem high, it is also a symbol of good will towards a disgruntled fan base. The team has undergone immense financial struggles in the past coupled with struggles on the field and was unable to resign popular shortstop Jose Reyes last offseason.

Despite the team’s struggles on and off the field, Wright has always maintained that he wanted to play his entire career with just one organization.
