(MIAMI) — Former MLB Slugger Tino Martinez has been hired as the Miami Marlins’ hitting coach.
He will work with recently hired manager Mike Redmond. The Marlins are putting together an entirely new coaching staff after a rough 2012 season. They went 69-93 and finished last in the National League East.
Martinez played first base in the majors for 16 seasons. He had an average of .217 with 339 home runs for the Yankees, Mariners, Cardinals and Rays. He also spent time as a New York Yankees special assistant and an analyst for the YES Network.z.
Martinez will have his work cut out for him. The Marlins batted .244 in 2012 which was the worst average in franchise history.
He will be replacing Eduardo Perez, who became the bench coach for the Houston Astros.
