Aides to the speaker also confirm the call, adding only, “Watch Boehner this morning” at a scheduled news conference on Capitol Hill.  Both sides refuse to say when during the day the call occurred.

This is the second Obama-Boehner call in four days, and it comes as Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner heads to meetings on the Hill to work toward a bipartisan deal to avoid the “fiscal cliff.”

Congress has until the end of the year to come to an agreement on a budget.  If not, a package of tax increases and spending cuts will take place in January.

On Wednesday, Obama said his “hope is to get this done before Christmas.”

Boehner has said he remains “optimistic” that Republicans and Democrats will work together to avert this crisis.
