(REXBURG) – A retired K-9 officer from the city of Rexburg has been adopted after living in Rexburg’s animal shelter for several months.
Local News 8 reports the black lab named Sammy was given a new home in Idaho Falls. The new owner is a law-enforcement dog handler who has other retired dogs in his home.
The Rexburg Animal Shelter, which took care of Sammy until a home could be found, reports they received numerous calls from area residents, and even other police agencies, looking to adopt when the dog was “retired”.
Sammy’s story caused outrage on social media sites by dog owners who were angered a police dog was sent to an animal shelter.
