The car was apparently pulling out of a gas station when it struck the 32-year-old rider and sent him to the ground.

Yasmin Smith, who works at the gas station, said she “heard screeching of tires and a bang” before running out to see “a gentleman on the pavement.” She added, “He was in a lot of pain with his ribs. He actually thought that he had broken his ribs. His hands looked bruised and were like, curled up a bit.”

Wiggins spent the night in a local hospital for observation and was released Thursday. His cycling team said Wiggins suffered “minor injuries, including a bruised hand and ribs.”
