(HELENA, Mont.) – Hundreds of thousands of American Indians should start receiving payouts from a $3.5 billion federal settlement by year’s end.
The lawsuit, which claimed the U.S. government had mismanaged tribal land trust royalties for over a century, was settled Friday.
The case began in 1996 when members of the Blackfeet Nation in Montana claimed there was little accounting for money held in trust by the government.
More than 350,000 beneficiaries will start receiving $1,000 checks next month as the first phase of reconciliation moves forward.
