Walt Disney Co. Donates $2M to Hurricane Sandy Relief, Recovery

Victor J. Blue/Bloomberg via Getty Images(BURBANK, Calif.) — The Walt Disney Company on Thursday announced it is donating $2 million to those impacted by Hurricane Sandy, including $1 million to the American Red Cross and $1 million to organizations working on rebuilding efforts.
Hurricane Sandy has caused power outages for millions of people from North Carolina to Maine, as emergency responders and utility companies scramble to aid the displaced. The U.S. death toll has reached at least 74 people, according to some estimates.
“It’s hard to fathom the devastation from this storm,” said Robert A. Iger, chairman and chief executive officer of The Walt Disney Company, in a statement. “Thousands of people in the hurricane’s path lost everything and face the daunting challenge of putting their lives and communities back together. We hope this helps provide immediate aid needed to get through this disaster and begin the road to recovery.”
The Walt Disney Company, which is the parent of ABC News, will also match the donations of company employees who give to eligible disaster relief groups.
The Disney-ABC Television Group and ESPN will run public service announcements on ABC, ABC.com, ABCNews.com, Radio Disney, and ESPN’s family of networks to encourage viewers to support relief and rebuilding efforts. In addition, various ABC programming on Monday will encourage viewers to donate.
