The team announced Monday that Alex Rodriguez will miss most of the first half of next season to recover from a second hip surgery which will take place in January.

According to a statement, the arthroscopic surgery will, “repair a torn labrum, bone impingement and the correction of a cyst” in his left hip and will take four to six months to recover from.

“It’s a significant blow,” Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said. “But we’ve dealt with significant blows and, hopefully, we’ll be able to deal with this one, as well.”

It will be the second hip procedure performed on Rodriguez since 2009, when he had a similar surgery done on his right hip. The 37-year old had complained of hip problems during last season’s playoffs, but an MRI came back negative at that time.

Rodriguez had a .272 average with 18 homers and 57 RBIs last year for the Yankees.
