(HOUSTON) — The Houston Astros signed free agent first baseman Carlos Pena to a one-year contract on Monday. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The 34-year-old Pena is expected to be the designated hitter when Houston moves from the National League to the American League in 2013.
“Looking forward to what the future holds for here, my new teammates, the new beginning, the new uniform,” Pena said. “It’s all just very exciting.”
Last season with the Rays, Pena batted .197 with 19 home runs and 61 RBIs. It was his second stint with Tampa Bay, having previously played with them from 2007-2010.
