Jamie Sabau/Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) — Former college basketball coach Rick Majerus died at the age of 64 Saturday.

The man who took the Utah Utes to the 1998 NCAA Finals died of heart failure at a Los Angeles hospital.

“He was real as a friend. He was real as a coach. He was a mentor to so many young coaches. He always had time for people,” Current ESPN College Basketball Analyst and former Virginia Tech head coach Seth Greenberg said. “Rick was a special guy that lived life his own way and was very comfortable in his own skin.”

Majerus coached last season at St. Louis and ended the schools 12-year tournament drought. The school announced Nov. 19 that Majerus would not return due to a heart condition.

Through his 25-years of coaching at St. Louis, Utah, Marquette and Ball State, he compiled a record of 517-216 and led teams to the NCAA tournament 12 times.
