Harvests Down at National Elk Refuge

  Published at

(JACKSON, Wyo.) – The number of elk killed during this year’s hunt in the National Elk Refuge is the lowest on record.

Hunters killed 87 elk this year, less than half of the average of 180 killed each year over the past two decades. Last year’s hunt killed only 110.

Wildlife biologists say it’s possible that more reports will come from this year’s hunt, though the low numbers may result from smarter animals and lower migration rates.

Officials hope to reduce the winter elk herd to about 5,000, significantly lower than the 7,700 that stayed in the area last winter.
