Boehner came to the White House Monday night for Obama’s annual holiday party for members of Congress, but the speaker didn’t pose for a photograph with the president as he has in the past and as other members of Congress did Monday night.

Neither the president nor the speaker is said to think much of the deficit reduction proposal the other has put on the table.

The two sides have until the end of the year to avoid the so-called “fiscal cliff,” a package of automatic tax increases and spending cuts that will go into effect on Jan. 1 if Congress and the White House do not agree on a deal first.
