Pope’s Newest Following: The Twitterverse

Carlos Alvarez/Getty Images(THE VATICAN) — Pope Benedict XVI is seeking a different kind of follower: he’s getting his own Twitter account.
On Dec. 12, the Pope will send his first tweet from the new and official papal account @Pontifex, the Vatican said. The first tweets will be in response to questions put to the pope about faith and belief.
The Vatican has set up seven other accounts so it can tweet simultaneously in a variety of languages; they include: Spanish (@pontifex_es), Italian (@pontifex_it), Portuguese (@pontifex_pt), German (@pontifex_de), Polish (@pontifex_pl), Arabic (@pontifex_ar), and French (@pontifex_fr). Additional languages may be added in the future, the Vatican said.
And in case there was any doubt, the pope won’t actually be the one punching the keys. The pontiff is not a fan of computers — or typewriters, for that matter — and still writes his speeches by hand.
