The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 15 points to close at 13,170 — a one-month high. The Nasdaq Composite added nine points, and the S&P was up less than a point at the end of Monday’s session.

A strong sales report from McDonald’s offset concerns about the surprise resignation of Italy’s prime minister. McDonald’s rose 93 cents after announcing a key sales figure bounced back in November. The fast food giant says U.S. customers snapped up more breakfast offerings and limited-time cheddar bacon onion sandwiches.

European markets managed to post gains despite the resignation of Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti. The Wall Street Journal reports that many had expected Monti to get the country’s fiscal house in order.  The Stoxx Europe 600 closed up 0.1 percent Monday.
