The incident began when the officer attempted to pull over the unidentified male suspect Monday morning. It was then, authorities said, that the suspect hit another car and tried to escape. The chase ended in a nearby parking lot where the officer approached the vehicle. That’s when the suspect pulled a gun and began shooting, witnesses said, according to ABC News affiliate KTRK.

“He was struggling with him and he was telling him to get out and when he went to reach, all you saw was an arm and a gun, and I’m like, ‘Are you serious. You’re going to take out a gun on a cop?’ And he shot the guy,” said witness Milton Navarette.

A bystander was also fatally shot.

The suspect is also believed to have been shot. He is hospitalized in critical condition, and is expected to survive.

The identities of those involved were not immediately released.
