The 2000-01 NBA MVP was invited by the Dallas Mavericks’ D-League affiliate, the Texas Legends, to play for the team which is co-owned by Dallas Mavericks president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson.

“I thank Donnie and Dallas for the consideration and while I think the D-League is a great opportunity,” Iverson tweeted Tuesday. “It is not the route for me.”

Iverson went on to tweet: “I realize my actions contributed to my early departure from the NBA, should God provide me another opportunity I will give it my all…My dream has always been to complete my legacy in the NBA.”

“To my fans, I love yall! Not a day goes by that I am not asked when am I coming back, we all must accept that my return is not up to just me.”

The last time the now 37-year-old Iverson played in an NBA game was during the 2009-10 season. He played three games for the Memphis Grizzlies but the situation didn’t work because Iverson didn’t feel he was getting enough minutes. He then played for the Philadelphia 76ers for 25 games before taking a leave of absence in February of 2010.

Iverson, an 11-time All-Star, averaged 26.7 points and 6.7 assists in his 14 NBA seasons with the 76ers, Nuggets, Pistons and Grizzlies.
