Bannock County Sheriff Discusses Standoff

(POCATELLO, ID)  —  Bannock County Sheriff Lorin Neilsen addressed the media Thursday morning to discuss Wednesday’s standoff and shooting of 25-year old Boede Paul.   The Sheriff said Paul contacted his office around 1pm Wednesday indicating he had allegedly killed missing Pocatello woman Angelea Schultz, and wanted to lead officials to where he buried her body.   Neilsen says Paul led officers to a location off of Reservation Road in the Fort Hall Indian Reservation and parked in an area near the intersection.   A six-hour standoff ensued, and shortly after 7pm Wednesday evening, Paul emerged from his truck, pointed a gun at officers and began shooting.   Neilsen says nine officers returned fire.  Eight deputies from Bannock county and one from Bingham County.   Those officers have been relieved of duty while an investigation is carried out.    The Sheriff says Pocatello Police will be conducting the criminal investigation, and officers from Bonneville, Fremont and Clark counties will conduct the internal investigation.    Neilsen says the reason for the outside agencies involvement in the case is strictly for Transparency reasons.At times emotional, the Sheriff indicated that NO officer was ‘high-fiving’ after Paul was killed.   “None of us become police officers to kill people, we become police officer to protect people”.

Paul was apparently the boyfriend of the missing Angelea Schultz.   As of this time, the Sheriff says they are still treating her disappearance as a Missing Person, however investigators are searching the area that was pointed out by Paul.   No other information will be released until the investigation is completed by Pocatello PD, or until Ms. Schultz is found.
