The Bears have hired the CFL’s Montreal Alouettes head coach Marc Trestman to the same position.

Trestman will take over for Lovie Smith, who coached the team for nine seasons and was fired after a 10-6 season did not result in a playoff appearance for Chicago.

Trestman will be introduced at a Thursday morning press conference. The Chicago Tribune first had the story.

The 57-year old Trestman is a noted offensive mind and has tutored numerous NFL quarterbacks, including current Bears quarterback Jay Cutler. He has also worked with Steve Young, Rich Gannon and Bernie Kosar.

He is coming off an 11-7 season in the CFL, and won back-to-back championships in the league in 2009 and 2010. He recently signed a contract extension with the Alouettes, but is expected to be allowed to leave to coach the Bears.
