Burke will be replaced by the team’s senior vice president of hockey operations David Nonis, while Burke will stay with the team as a senior advisor.

“Brian will not have direct authority over hockey operations, however this new role will allow our board and I to continue to benefit from his hockey expertise,” Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment president Tom Anselmi said in a statement. “We want to thank Brian for accepting his new role and staying on with our organization.”

Burke has served as the team’s GM since November of 2008. During his time in that position, the Maple Leafs never made the playoffs.

Nonis has actually replaced Burke before. Burke served as the Vancouver Canucks general manager from 1998 until the end of 2003-04 season when Nonis replaced him.

Burke was the general manager of the Anaheim Ducks when they won the Stanley Cup in 2007.
