Varejao is currently in a Cleveland clinic and is expected to be hospitalized for the next few days.  The team announced he will be on blood-thinning medications for the next three months.

The league leader in rebounding has been sidelined since January with a bruised knee.  He had surgery to repair a torn muscle in his leg and was expected to return at some point this season.

“Losing him already was bad enough for us,” point guard Kyrie Irving said. “The news got worse today. We wish him the best. We’re all going to be there for him morale-wise, just try to be there for him as best as we can as teammates. That’s all we can do right now.”

Before the injury, Varejao was averaging 14.1 points and 14.4 rebounds in 25 games for the Cavaliers.

The Cavaliers have a 10-32 record this season.
