Djokovic, Sharapova Advance At The Australian Open
Published at(MELBOURNE, Australia) — Two-time defending champion Novak Djokovic outlasted 15th seeded Stanislas Wawrinka in five sets, 1-6, 7-5, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 12-10, to advance to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open.
The 27-year-old Wawrinka took the top-seeded Djokovic to 22nd game of their final set, before the five-time Grand Slam champion won with a cross-court backhand on his third match point.
The match lasted 5 hours and 2 minutes.
On the women’s side, second seeded Maria Sharapova made quick work of Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium, 6-1, 6-0 to advance to the quarterfinals where she will face 19th seeded Ekaterina Makarova.
