New Penn State Lawsuit: NCAA Sued over School Fine
Published at(HARRISBURG, Pa.) — Pennsylvania’s governor on Wednesday announced that the state is filing a federal anti-trust lawsuit against the NCAA over sanctions imposed on Penn State University in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky sexual abuse scandal.
After Sandusky was convicted, the NCAA punished the school for its moral failings with, among other things, a $60 million fine to be spent on child sex abuse prevention.
Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett believes the NCAA overstepped its authority. He’s suing to make sure the money is spent only on programs in Pennsylvania.
Voters in the state were unhappy with the sanctions that also vacated wins, kept the Nittany Lions out of bowl games, and reduced scholarships.
The NCAA said Wednesday it is “disappointed” and called the governor’s lawsuit a setback to the university’s efforts to move forward.
