Officers responding to reports of a traffic incident around 2:50 a.m. Sunday in the Bronx arrived to find a pedestrian trapped beneath the cab, according to Sgt. Brendan Ryan of the NYPD.

Several officers, working together, were able to lift the cab off the man, who was not identified, and transport him to a nearby hospital where he remains in critical condition. His injuries have not been specified.

The driver of the taxi cab remained on the scene and no charges are likely, according to police.  Police have not released the name of the victim, described as a young Hispanic male, or any details about the rescue as the investigation is ongoing.

An eyewitness who captured the rescue on camera told ABC News he believed the victim was involved in an altercation at a nearby restaurant before he ran into the street.

“Cops were chasing this guy yelling, ‘No, stop, stop!’” Enrique Elias told ABC News.  “Then I heard a loud noise and looked outside and started to take pictures.  When I realized they were going to move the car I started to film video.  It was incredible.”
